Homophobes and Other Confusions

Shakespeare's Sister had a very good post on the Tom Foley email debacle yesterday that contained a link to an ABC site on the story.

As I was reading some of the reader comments, a few caught my attention:

Well, guess it's not just a smear tactic afterall... Hmm, politician is a closet homosexual. Color me surprised.
Comming soon to the Onion: Gay man tearfully admits to being US Congressman.

One less upstanding pro-family Republican Senator "Value Voters" can cast their vote for.Bet he was also against same-sex marriage. The closet can be a terrible place.

Another closeted gay Republican revealed. One who by the way opposed gay rights. Another portrait in hypocracy.

Frankly, I am baffled by the amount of well-intentioned folks who still equate homosexuality with pedophilia. Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with having a sexual proclivity toward children.

Pedophilia is legally defined as "an obsession with children as sex objects."

In fact, the overwhelming majority of child sex offenders are heterosexual men who have abused female victims.

Linking homosexuality with pedophilia only seeks to foster the irrational hysteria associated with same-sex love that still exists in this country.

Hello Melissa - I found you through "Carbon Paper".

Anyone would be remiss in declaring certain thoughts about Foley without checking his voting record. He has a stellar record when it comes to voting for gay rights and voted "nay" on the gay marrige ban.

If the allegations against him are true, then he deserves everything he has coming to him - but I think everyone should let things play out.

No doubt it is good to have him off the hill - even though he voted against his party line on gay issues, he voted right along party lines on everything else that is going wrong in this country. It's just unfortunate for the possible victims in this case, with regards to the way he's been ousted.

I enjoyed reading your blog - you have good message to send to the world. If you happen to visit, be not affraid, as my bark is much worse than my bite. I will be linking you unless you find it objectionable - that and I love the Bush countdown clock and plan to replace my current clock with it. :)

Beltway -

Thank you for your visit to my site and for your kind comments.

My intent, when posting on Foley, was not a commentary on him or his voting record, per se, but a reminder to the rest of us that our language choice is a very powerful tool. Especially with all of the misinformation and stereotyping around GLBT issues, we have an obligation to speak clearly and not perpetuate the myths commonly associated with homosexuality.

Please link away, and use the countdown clock with abandon! Sometimes, just watching the seconds tick away is enough to put me in a better mood :)

Sorry, I don't think that came out as intended. I was more or less commenting on one of the post you quoted.

As for the rest, I totally agree. I think too large a majority of the American public skews the difference between the two.

Great point that need to be highlighted!
Most find it hypocritical for the supposed morally superior Republicans to be covering up for the preversions of one of their own.
Most child molesters are straight men. Even if Mr. Foley is gay, that should be a seperate issue from soliciting, or abusing children.
Just as entering a treatment program should not be an avenue of blame or reason for a lighter sentence.
Now that society has accepted alcholisum as a diease, it seems all sorts of bad behavior is given less severe sentencing if being alcholic is proven.

yeah i can't understand it either- 'color me confused' by continued ignorance.

Time: Welcome and thanks for jumping in!

I agree with your comment about the treatment facility. If Foley does have a drinking problem, then I commend him for seeking help. However, this does not excuse his grossly inappropriate behavior.
